EDINBURG, Texas— The Edinburg Roadrunners used an eight run fifth inning to come from behind to defeat the Abilene Prairie Dogs 12-6 Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Edinburg (20-13) sent 13 hitters to the plate to score eight runs. They used six straight hits in the inning that was highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Felix Molina and Osiel Flores.
Tim Battle got the scoring started in the bottom of the second with an RBI single that allowed Cristobal Santana to score making it 1-0.
Nick Ochoa and Zach Welch each had RBI singles in the top of the fourth off of Edinburg starter Matison Smith. A wild pitch then allowed Case Rigby to score from third giving the Prairie Dogs (14-18) the 3-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Joe Weik hit his league leading seventh homerun of the season, a two-run shot, which extended their lead 5-1.
The Roadrunners answered back with eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth knocking out Abilene starter Brian Smith (3-3).
Wilmer Pino got in on the action with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Tim Battle. With two runners on Eric Bloom hit a two-run double that allowed Pino and Derek Perren to score pushing the Roadrunners lead 12-5.
Smith (3-2) pitched six innings and allowed five runs while recording five strike outs.
After the Prairie Dogs got a run in the ninth, Rusty Jones struck out Chris Caves to end the ball game giving Edinburg the 12-6 victory.
The Roadrunners and Prairie Dogs will play the second game of their four-game series Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Miguel Martinez (4-2) is expected to face Woods Fines (1-4) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
