FORT WORTH, Texas—Miguel Martinez pitched eight strong innings leading the Edinburg Roadrunners past the Fort Worth Cats 3-2 Tuesday night at LaGrave Field. The win snapped Edinburg’s three-game losing streak.
Martinez (9-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on seven hits in eight innings pitched with four strike outs.
The Cats (39-32) got things started in the bottom of the first as C.J. Beatty and Chuck Caufield hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners. Chad Gabriel followed with an RBI single that allowed Beatty to score making it 1-0.
The Roadrunners (42-29) answered back and got all the runs Martinez needed in the top of the second. Carlos Hereaud started the inning with a single and then came around to score on an RBI double by Derek Perren. A fielding error then allowed Felix Molina to reach and Perren to score from second. One out later, Osiel Flores drove in Molina with a single that gave Edinburg the 3-1 lead.
Martinez allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth after a couple of errors behind him. Scott Dalrymple took advantage of the miscues and drove in Brandon Jones to cut the Roadrunners lead to 3-2.
That is all Martinez, the league leader in wins, would allow as he handed the ball to Paul Koss in the ninth. Koss picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth and two strike outs giving Edinburg the 3-2 victory.
Former Roadrunner James Giulietti (3-5) pitched well for the Cats but took the loss after allowing three runs, two earned, in seven and a third innings.
The Roadrunners and Cats will continue their four-game series Wednesday night at LaGrave Field as Edinburg looks for the series split. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
