EDINBURG, Texas--- The Edinburg Roadrunners won back-to-back games for the first time this season after defeating the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 6-1 Sunday night at Harlingen Field.
Ryan Smith (1-0) got his first win of the season after allowing just one run in six innings of work. He scattered five hits while striking out three.
The Roadrunners (3-2) got two runs in the top of the second for Smith, who did not allow a run until the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to WhiteWings catcher Mario Mercedes.
Leading 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh, Edinburg added four runs including a three-run homerun by Tim Battle, his first of the season, extending their lead 6-1.
The bullpen held the lead for Smith and the Roadrunners as they kept RGV off the scoreboard in the final three innings giving Edinburg the 6-1 victory.
Edinburg and Rio Grande Valley will play the second game of their four-game series Monday night at Harlingen Field. Miguel Martinez is expected to pitch for the Roadrunners with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
