EDINBURG, Texas— The Edinburg Roadrunners got seven strong innings from Miguel Martinez as they defeated the McAllen Thunder 3-2 Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium for their third straight win.
Martinez (8-3) allowed one run in seven innings and struck out seven for his league leading eight win of the season.
The Thunder (21-40) broke through in the top of the fourth with an RBI double from Nelson Teilon that scored Yasser Gomez giving them the 1-0 lead.
Edinburg (39-22) answered back in the bottom of the fourth when Derek Perren hit a two-run double that scored Vincent Blue and Carlos Hereaud giving the Roadrunners the 2-1 advantage.
Stantrel Smith got the Roadrunners another run with his legs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith reached on a one-out single and then moved to second on a balk. He then stole third base and came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher that pushed Edinburg’s lead 3-1.
McAllen put together a late rally in the top of the eighth. Matt Redding and Roberto Rodriguez led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Two outs later, Gomez hit an RBI infield single that scored Redding from third making it 3-2. Rodriguez, the tying run on the bases, was tagged out at the plate ending the inning.
Julio Castro picked up his 11th save of the season with a scoreless ninth giving Edinburg the 3-2 victory.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play the second game of their series Saturday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Matison Smith (5-3) is expected to face Alex Smith (1-2) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
