HARLINGEN, Texas--- Ambiorix Concepcion hit two home runs and drove in seven as the Edinburg Roadrunners defeated the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 15-9 Saturday night at Harlingen Field.
Wilmer Pino and Felix Molina started the game with back-to-back walks against Misael De Jesus. After a double steal that put runners at second and third, Concepcion hit a three-run home run to make the score 3-0.
The Roadrunners added another run in the top of the second inning when Concepcion hit into an RBI fielder’s choice that allowed Osiel Flores to score extending their lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, the WhiteWings took a 5-4 lead after getting three straight RBI doubles against Edinburg starter Eric Montoya.
With two outs in the top of the third inning a wild pitch from RGV pitcher Juan Peralta (0-1) allowed Vincent Blue to score tying the game at five.
Former Roadrunner Eric Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third that allowed Jeff Toth to score giving the WhiteWings a 6-5 lead.
Concepcion hit an RBI single in the top of the fourth that plated Molina from second to tie things up at six.
Edinburg regained the lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI double by Flores that drove in Robert Matlock from first making the score 7-6.
Back-to-back hits in the top of the sixth by Molina and Carlos Hereaud put runners on the corners for Concepcion who then hit his second home run of the game. Blue then followed with a triple to deep right center field and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Melvin Perez extending the Roadrunner’s lead to 11-6.
RGV scored two runs against Edinburg reliever Aaron Guerra in the bottom of the sixth inning cutting the Roadrunner’s lead to 11-8.
Two errors in the bottom of the seventh allowed the WhiteWings to score a run to make it 11-9.
In the top of the eighth inning, Concepcion reached on an infield hit, moved to second on an error and came into score on Perez’ RBI double. After moving to third on a fly ball to right field, Perez then scored on an Alexis Hernandez’ RBI single extending the Roadrunner’s lead 13-9.
Edinburg added two more runs in the ninth on a two-run single by Blue making it a 15-9 game.
Ricardo Serrano pitched the final three innings of the game picking up his first save of the season.
Montoya (1-0) got the win after pitching five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out two.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the second game of the series on Sunday at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Mike Reeves (0-0) is expected to face right-hander Stephen Whalen (0-0) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
