EDINBURG, Texas--- A five run top of the seventh inning helped the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings defeat the Edinburg Roadrunners 6-5 Thursday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (0-2) jumped out in front in the bottom second. Osiel Flores led off the inning with a single and then moved over to third after R.J. Harris hit a single to right field. A fielding error allowed Harris to score giving Edinburg the 2-0 lead.
Corey Goudeau (0-1) held the WhiteWings (2-0) scoreless until the top of the fifth. Leo Delgado led off the inning with a single and then two outs later, Antonio De Jesus hit an RBI single scoring Delgado and cutting the Roadrunners lead 2-1.
In the top of the seventh inning, RGV sent 13 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits. The inning was highlighted by a three-run triple by Carl Johnson which helped the WhiteWings gain the 6-2 lead.
Edinburg answered back in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Jason Moody (1-0). Stantrel Smith hit a one-out double to right center field. A fielding error allowed Smith to score and C.J. Beatty to reach. After Adam Gordon walked, Gabe Memmert singled to load the bases for Brandon Wilkerson who then hit a two-run single to right field making it 6-5 RGV.
Jason Thomas led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center and then moved to second after a sacrifice bunt by Robert Matlock. Thomas got all the way to third bases but Edgar Martinez got the final out of the ball game giving the WhiteWings the 6-5 victory.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the third game of their four-game series Friday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
