EDINBURG, Texas—The Edinburg Roadrunners fell short on their comeback attempt as they fell 8-6 to the San Angelo Colts Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium as they had the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth.
The Colts (35-20) grabbed the first lead of the ball game with a sacrifice fly by Mark Ramos that allowed Landon Camp to score from third. After a walk to Danny Hernandez, Ronnie Gaines hit an RBI single scoring Vic Ferrante giving San Angelo the 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Osiel Flores and Robert Matlock reached on singles. Stantrel Smith then followed with a two-run double down the third base line scoring Flores and Matlock tying the game at two.
In the top of the sixth, Cory Patton delivered a two-run single that allowed Hernandez and Gaines to score from second and third. Daryl Jones followed with a two-run home run giving the Colts the 6-2 lead.
Wellington Dotel inched the Roadrunners (24-34) closer in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run triple to right center field that allowed Matlock and Smith from first and second. A sacrifice bunt from Jonathan Fernandez then allowed Dotel to score making it 6-5 score in favor of the Colts.
San Angelo picked up another run in the top of the seventh when Gaines was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and that allowed Ferrante to score extending their lead 7-5.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dotel hit his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot, cutting the Colts lead 7-6.
After San Angelo added a run in the top of the ninth, Sean Kramer pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth giving them the 8-6 victory.
Logan Williamson (9-0) picked up the win after allowing five runs on 10 hits in the five and a third innings pitched.
The Roadrunners and Colts will play game two of their four-game series Wednesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Toro Trevino (4-3) is expected to start with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
